Working notes from building SimuLook. Most of what is here came out of pointing a cable at a Fujifilm and writing down what it answered — including the times it answered something we did not expect, and the times we had it wrong.
No recipe roundups. There are already good ones, written by people who have been at it far longer.

Highlight and shadow move in half steps, and we were rounding them away
Your camera offers −0.5 on two of its tone controls. Our app stored whole numbers, so a recipe read off a body was not quite that recipe. Here is what broke and how we found it.

Noise reduction is not a slider
Every other Fujifilm tone control stores a number you can predict. Noise reduction stores nine values that are not in menu order, and that is why it resisted reading for months.

Read a recipe out of a photo you already shot
Your Fujifilm writes the settings it used into every JPEG. No cable, no camera, and unlike the USB path it is not limited to one body.

What your Fujifilm actually stores when you save a recipe
A custom slot is not a file. It is two dozen numbers sitting in the camera, and once you know which is which you can read them off over a cable.
Everything above is measured on hardware we own, and says so when it is not. If something here is wrong, tell us — we would rather correct it than defend it.
